Here's The Scoop with CBD Oil

CBD (Cannabidiol) products have become more popular recently and are now being used for our four-legged family members.   Given the newness and the nature of the product, it's not surprising that there have been some questions regarding CBD Oil...

Here's The Scoop with CBD Oil!

What is CBD Oil?

Cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) are found throughout the body and brain, and different receptors affect different functions. Some cannabinoid receptors affect pain sensation, some affect mood, some appetite and some work on the immune system. The function of the endocannabinoid system is to maintain a stable environment in the body.

The cannabinoids found in hemp work by stimulating these receptors, and can signal the body to build more cannabinoid receptors. This is why the ElleVet product may work better and better over time, as your dog or cat's body builds more receptors and promotes better results.

Hemp contains naturally occurring compounds called cannabinoids. There are over 140 known cannabinoids that have been identified in hemp and these cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid system found in animals and in humans.

The Doctors at North Shore Animal Hospital have spent a lot of time researching various CBD products and have chosen the ElleVet brand.  Like many of our clients, I was curious as to how CBD oils work and how it could help our dog and cat patients.  I asked Dr. Whitney why he recommends CBD oils and why he chose the Ellevet  brand of CBD products:

Q:  What made you choose the ElleVet brand of CBD products over others?

A:  Ellevet did studies on mobility with Cornell University. They are the only company with studies like this. They also do quality control on each batch.  Ellevet has significantly more CBDA (Cannabidiolic acid) than other brands and more active metabolite than fifteen others..

Q:  What conditons would you recommend CBD Oils for?

A:  Mobility issues for now.   There have been no studies done yet on helping with seizures or behavioral issues.

Q:  How has the product been tested?

A:  Ellevet has completed one study with Cornell University and is in four additional trials with the University of Florida Veterinary School with their product.

Q:  How is CBD Oil dosed?

A:: The dosing is based on the pet's weight. ElleVet has done metabolic analysis and pharmacokinetic studies at Cornell University to determine what the proper dosing should be.

Q::  How do you get your pet to take CBD products?

A:  It comes in a peanut butter flavored soft chew treat and

an oil version that can be added to your pet's favorite food

or treats.  We would recommend the oil version for cats because you can add it to something that they really enjoy, such as canned tuna..

Q:  Are there any side effects to using CBD Oils for pets?

A:  Lethargy can be a side effect. Other brands of  CBD products can contain THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, the chemical responsible for most of marijuana's psychological effects) or otner impurities.
